Highlighted as a “superstar stain remover” by Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, Blue Stick is manufactured at Yokosuka Prison in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, and is widely known by its popular moniker, “Prison Soap.”
Japanese correctional authorities market and sell various products manufactured by prison inmates through the Correction Apparel and Industry Center (CAPIC). Blue Stick stands as CAPIC’s flagship bestseller, boasting more than 150,000 sets sold over the past 22 years.
Originally developed around 1990 at Yokohama Prison, production was transferred to Yokosuka Prison in 1997. The product is particularly renowned among fabric care specialists for its exceptional effectiveness against stubborn, set-in stains that standard washing fails to remove—most notably collar grime on dress shirts and soil along wedding gown hems.
