Man accused of driving under the influence, crashing into Naugatuck dry cleaners

[wfsb.com – 2023-12.24] NAUGATUCK, Conn. (WFSB) – A Naugatuck man is accused of driving under the influence and crashing into a dry cleaner on Christmas Eve.

Police say 22-year-old Zachary Hummel crashed into Beany’s Cleaners on Rubber Ave. during the early morning hours of Christmas Eve.

According to police Hummel crashed into the building and a crosswalk pole before fleeing the scene.

Police tracked the car less than half a mile to the Horizon Homes apartment complex. The car, registered to Hummel, had damage consistent with the severity of the crash.

Officers found him at his residence and was given a sobriety test which he failed.

He was charged with operating under the influence, evading responsibility with property damage, failure to drive in the proper lane, and traveling too fast for the conditions.

He was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on January 25.

“The Naugatuck Police Department reminds the community to remain vigilant and considerate on the roads, especially during the holiday season,” said Naugatuck police.

Police said no one was injured in this incident.
