As a former dry cleaners, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said the groundwater, soil, and soil vapor was contaminated, and criteria and guidance values for volatile organic compounds were exceeded.
Officials said additional investigating will be needed to determine the nature and extent of contamination and the potential for human exposure.
A report on the scope of work needed at Silvestri Dry Cleaners said the site is 0.37 acres. The first floor of the building operated as a dry cleaning business from 1956 to 2019. A now-closed dance studio was located on the second floor.
A site assessment was done in 2021 to evaluate the presence of chlorinated solvents, VOCs, PCBS, pesticides, PFAS, and metals. A reconnaissance visit with the DEC project manager took place in 2023.
The DEC said the former cleaners was added to the superfund registry as a Class 2 site, meaning the location poses a significant threat to public health or the environment, and action is required.
The DEC is also actively working to remediate another Class 2 location in Ballston Spa. They are expediting the clean-up process of the former Rickett’s Dry Cleaners by working on-site to eliminate any harmful human exposure.
Since around 1980, the DEC has cleaned up about 2,000 brownfield and state superfund sites across the state. There are about 450-500 others sites in the state’s superfund program that are listed as Class 2.
