Five injured, one critical after stolen vehicle crashes into car, NW side dry cleaner

[wgntv.com – 2024.08.24] At least five people are in the hospital after a stolen vehicle crashed into a car and a dry cleaning business on the Northwest Side, according to the Chicago Police Department.

CPD said a black Audi that had a driver and three passengers was being monitored by a police helicopter in the 7600 block of West Touhy Avenue around 10:35 p.m. Friday, when the driver lost control while driving at high speeds.

At this point, the Audi hit another vehicle before crashing into the brick wall of a dry cleaning business near the intersection of West Touhy and North Ottawa Avenue.

Police said the black Audi was a stolen vehicle and the driver, a 21-year-old man, suffered leg and spine injuries before being taken to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition.

Another male and three females were also taken to local area hospitals for minor injuries.

After an initial investigation, CPD said officers recovered a handgun, but did not confirm whether the gun was recovered from the stolen vehicle.

Before the two crashes above happened, the stolen vehicle may have also been involved in a previous accident.

“I pulled up and the street was already blocked off,” said Eddie Thomas, who alleges he was hit by the black Audi before it crashed into the dry cleaning business. “I let the officers know that I’m pretty sure the black Audi — I asked the officers, ‘Was it the black Audi?’ — Well, he crashed into me by Milwaukee and Addison.”

CPD has not confirmed whether the black Audi was involved in a prior crash.
