[sgfcitizen.org – 2025.05.23] SPRINGFIELD, MO – A century-old Springfield dry cleaning business has permanently closed its doors.

Lloyds Dry Cleaners, which started in 1922, has closed all of its stores in the Springfield region, according to a notice posted on the door of its East Sunshine location. The dry cleaner has asked customers to retrieve all items by May 24 at the Springfield store, located at 3630 E. Sunshine St., and a store in Ozark, located at 1601 W. Highway J.

“After 100 years of service, we are truly saddened to announce that we are now closed,” the notice on the storefront said. “Thank you for being part of our 103 years!”

Lloyds Dry Cleaners was started by Gay Elsie Lloyd, who is the first woman to ask to join the Young Men’s Business Club in 1916 in Springfield. In 1922, Lloyds acquired a building at 216 E. Central St. and opened its doors with a phone number of 82, according to the company website. In 1973, the Lloyd family sold the business after 51 years in business.

The shopping center located at 3624-3630 E. Sunshine St. had just over 7,200 square feet and was owned by Oak Star Bank, according to Greene County Assessor’s Office records. The center was appraised at $1.07 million.

Lloyds Dry Cleaners did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment on the closure. The voicemail recording at the East Sunshine store reiterated that the business was closed and that existing customers should pick up their garments as soon as possible.
