“It could have been a lot worse,” said Sung Baik, owner of Glen Park Cleaners at 701 Chenery St., who stood across from his damaged business wearing a black shirt and black jeans dusted with flame retardant. “We deal with a lot of chemical stuff, and we’re lucky it didn’t get into that.”
After the blaze was reported at 7:16 p.m., the San Francisco Fire Department put it out by 8:08 p.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Brook Baker. Standing near the corner of Chenery and Diamond streets, a normally busy intersection encircled with thick fire hoses, he said that the residents lived in two units, one above the dry cleaner and one behind it.
Baik became aware of the fire when he heard a strange noise and turned around to see a rack of clothing on fire.
“All I saw was the fire was springing up,” he said. “The only thing on my mind is I had to get the fire out.”
Baik tried to use a fire extinguisher, but the fire was too strong. He said his employee had a small burn on her arm and that the residents were not in the building when the fire happened. Baker said they would probably be displaced for a while because of damage to the building.
